For people

The part of the job nobody trained you for.

Most engineers are promoted for being good at engineering, and then handed a job that is mostly not engineering. People, priorities, politics, and saying no. I have made most of the mistakes available in that transition, and these sessions are me sitting with you so you can skip a few of them.

Here on behalf of a company rather than for yourself? The company side is over at The CTO Office, with the full list of engagements and fees.

Two ways to do this

Ongoing coaching, or one honest conversation.

Coaching for engineers and leaders

Priced per engagement

Agreed in writing before we start. Usually fortnightly, for three months or longer.

For engineers stepping into their first leadership role, managers who want to be better at it, and technology leaders dealing with the friction that comes from working alongside the business rather than inside engineering.

  • A regular session, with the agenda set by whatever is actually on your desk
  • Frameworks for the recurring problems: prioritising, delegating, hiring, saying no
  • Honest feedback, including when I think you are the problem
  • Whatever we discuss stays between us

Career guidance and mentoring

No fee

One session, thirty to forty-five minutes. I keep time aside for this every month.

For anyone earlier in the path: students, engineers in their first years, and people who feel stuck and cannot name why. Bring one real question. You do not need to dress it up.

  • Which direction to take, and what the next two years could look like
  • Moving from engineering into management, product, or something else
  • What to do when the job stopped teaching you anything
  • If I am not the right person to ask, I will say so and try to point you at someone who is

How it works

Nothing complicated.

One

You write to me

A few lines about where you are and what is on your mind. I read it myself.

Two

We talk

Online, usually. If it turns out one conversation is all you needed, that is a good outcome and we stop there.

Three

You decide

If regular sessions would help, we agree what they cost and how often, in writing, before the second one.

Being straight with you

This helps some people and not others.

Worth your time if

  • You have a specific situation, not just a general wish to improve
  • You are willing to hear something you disagree with
  • You can act on it, even in a small way, before we speak again

Probably not if

  • You want someone to review your CV or refer you into a job. I am not a recruiter
  • You want technical training on a language or a framework. There are better places for that
  • The decision is already made and you want someone to agree with it

Get in touch

Tell me where you are.

This goes straight to me. No mailing list, no automated follow-up.

Got it.

Thank you for writing. I will read it properly and reply myself, usually within a working day or two.

Would rather talk than write? Pick a time for a short call, around thirty minutes, and we will speak directly.
